101 Domains Domain Information Update ".ec" domains.

Important: When entering your search string don't write “www” or the Ecuadorian domain type, ie. “ec”. Therefore to search “www.101domains.ec” enter “101domains” and nothing else.

The only letters allowed within a domain name are: a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z - 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. Spaces are NOT ALLOWED.

Once the domain is registered

All Ecuadorian domain names registered with us are stored on our international server. Domains registered with us are automatically provided with their own under-construction page - this notifies potential registrants that the name has been acquired and is now registered. The under-construction page is offered free of charge and may be used indefinitely.

It is possible for Web and/or Mail forwarding to be provided for Ecuadorian domains.

Domain transfer/release fees are charged are by a majority of registrars, but 101 Domains make no charge to transfer a domain to another Ecuadorian domain name registrar.

Background

The ccTLD of Ecuador is ".ec" and domains can be registered under the second! level .ec domain name by anyone, anywhere, there is no need for a local presence in Ecuador in order to register under .ec.

In addition to the second level .ec domain registration, there are several sub-domains under .ec but some of these are restricted to Ecuadorian residents only, whilst other sub-domains are available to anyone, anywhere without a local presence.

Domain names can be registered under the extension below by anyone, anywhere without the need of a local presence in Ecuador:

  • .ec - general use
  • .com.ec - commercial use
  • .info.ec - information
  • .net.ec - Internet Service Providers
  • .fin.ec - Financial Institutions & Services
  • .med.ec - Medical, Health, Pharmaceutical institutions and organisations
  • .pro.ec Professionals like Lawyers, Architects, Accountants

There are other sub-domains under .ec which are only available to legal entities registered in Ecuador who have a local presence there:

  • .org.ec - Non-Profit and non-governmental organisations, registered in Ecuador
  • .edu.ec - Educational organisations like Universities, Schools, Collegses registered in Ecuador
  • .gov.ec - Only for use of the Government of the Republic of Ecuador and its governmental institutions
  • .mil.ec - Only for use of the Armed Forces of Ecuador

Domain names registered under .ec must be between 3 and 65 characters long, although the registry suggest a limit of 25 characters for practical purposes.

There are some domain names which are forbidden, these are names which match any existing (or new) internet protocols like "web", "www", "telnet", "http", "email" etc.

Domain names which "makes reference to aspects or official subjects of the country without having the due authorization for it" are also forbidden, as defined by the Ecuador registry.

Domain names which are offensive, contrary to the laws of Ecuador, or "affect the moral or alter public order" are also restricted and unavailable for registration.

Domains registered under .ec are initially registered for a minimum of two years, and can then be renewed annually or for 2,3,5 or 10 year periods.
