Once the domain is registered

All Cuban domain names registered with us are stored on our international server. Domains registered with us are automatically provided with their own under-construction page - this notifies potential registrants that the name has been acquired and is now registered. The under-construction page is offered free of charge and may be used indefinitely.

It is possible for Web and/or Mail forwarding to be provided for Cuban domains.

Domain transfer/release fees are charged are by a majority of registrars, but 101 Domains make no charge to transfer a domain to another Cuban domain name registrar.

Background

.cu is the top level domain (ccTLD) for Cuba.

The ccTLD for Cuba, meaning the Internet Country Code Top-Level Domain, is .cu. It is administered by CUBANIC and they are responsible for managing all tasks relating this .cu domain name. They provide the registration service and application for all second and third level domains. Their services are provided through CENIAInternet which is controlled by CITMATEL (The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment). It can be used by both foreign and local companies and persons. This means it can have a wider range of customers.

There are certain rules that must be revised before choosing the name of your domain names. These are as follows:

  • Characters from the Roman Alphabet (a-z) can be used, along with the Arabic digits (0-9).
  • Hyphens (-) can be placed in the domain name but they cannot be at the beginning or end. Two hyphens cannot be placed in a row (--).
  • The recommended length of a domain name is 5 characters, but the minimum is 3.
  • The maximum length is 63 characters. For practical reasons, it is not recommended to make it this long.

A domain name cannot be considered property, it is simply an electronic record made in the name of a certain person. It must be renewed every year with the required fee. If the domain name you want is not available, it is possible to look for a variant which includes a hyphen.

There are some instances where CUBANIC will reject a requested domain name. This could be due to any of the following reasons:

  • Composed of a sequence of digits, no characters of the alphabet used.
  • Use of an individuals name without permission.
  • If any term or phrase in the domain name is considered offensive.
  • Exclusive use of a Geographical term or adjective.
  • If it is associated with any trademark without permission.
  • Use of matching name to a TLD or generic second-level protocol.

If you require a domain name more specific to its role, you can look into different third-level domains which are available. These are as follows:
.gov.cuInstitutions under the Cuban government.
.edu.cuEducation and research.
.net.cuInternet service providers.
.inf.cuOrganisations connected with science and information.
.org.cuNGOs and non-profit organisations established in the Cuba (can both be national or international).
..com.cuEntities not covered by other classifications.
