Background
The Internet Country Code Top-level Domain name (ccTLD) for Seychelles, or the Republic of Seychelles, is .sc. It is an Archipelago nation containing 115 islands within the Indian Ocean, around 1,500 kilometers east of mainland Africa. It contains the smallest state within Africa, population wise.
It is managed and registration is controlled by VCS (Pty) Limited and was first introduced in the year 1997. It was originally meant for use solely within Seychelles, yet business soon spread to countries such as Scotland and North Carolina. Either way, it is still subject to the Seychelles registry rules. A company who once marketed the .sc domain name internationally, not only within Seychelles, was Sc-registrars but they have since closed down.
Registrations of the domain name .sc are directly beneath second or third level. Various second-level domain names are listed as follows:
- .com.sc : For commercial use.
- .edu.sc : For Educational Institutions.
- .gov.sc : For use by Governmental Institutions.
- .net.sc : For use by Network Infrastructure Machines and Organisations.
- .org.sc : For miscellaneous use, usually by non-profit organisations.
It is possible to be turned down in registrations if the Domain name carries trademarks owned by other parties or words that are not permitted within business names. This is unless the registrar is legally entitled to use such words. Domain names are also not permitted to have offensive, obscene names which can possibly confuse of mislead the public.
Domain names are given via a 'first come first served' basis.
Criteria that must be followed when registering a .sc domain name are as follows:
- Domain names should be short, being no more than 10 characters.
- The Roman alphabet (a-z) can be used.
- Digits 0-9 can be used.
- A Hyphen (-) can be used but cannot be placed as the first or last character.
- The domain name cannot contain only a single character.
