Background

.bs is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the Bahamas, officially known as the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, located in the Atlantic Ocean. It is registered under and operated by BSNIC and sponsored by the College of the Bahamas. Applicants who wish to register under the .bs domain name do not have to have a legal presence in the Bahamas, despite its intended use. However, the .bs domain name is not widely used.

Although registrations can take place directly at the second-level, applicants may register for the .bs domain at a third-level under various second-level domain labels which are as follows:

  • .com.bs - for commercial entities
  • .net.bs - for commercial entities
  • .org.bs - for non-governmental organisations and charities
  • .edu.bs - for education institutions and universities in the Bahamas
  • .gov.bs - for government agencies and entities in the Bahamas

Applicants for the registration of a .bs domain name must follow a set of requirements:

  • Characters allowed are the Roman alphabet (a-z), digits (1-9) and the hyphen (-).
  • The hyphen cannot be used at the beginning or the end of a domain. Two hyphens cannot be used consecutively.
  • Domain names are prohibited from having three or less characters.
