Background

The ccTLD for Denmark, an abbreviation for Internet Country Code Top-Level Domain, is .dk. It is managed by the DK-Hostmaster who, though there are no restrictions, need to approve the domain name registered for. If a Name Server needs to be tested, 500 Danish Krona plus VAT will be charged. This can be important seeing as if there is no approved or functioning name servers attached to the domain name, it may be deleted by the Danish Registry. They must be set up in advance and approved.

Once registered, an e-mail will be sent which will tell of the instructions on how to activate the domain name. There are Three Months from the date of registration in which you can activate the domain name, but if you wait over this time it will be deleted by the Danish Registry. You can register directly under .dk and the domain names are available under a 'first come, first served' basis. They can be registered from 1-3 years, or 5 years.

From 2007, a new rule was applied to domain names which are registered through DK Hostmaster. This was a suspension rule and is for the event of typo squatting. This refers to when a domain name is registered with an error, perhaps when a character or two is changed. If the domain name is familiar and already existing, it won't be allowed.

Background

.sh is the Internet country code top-level domain name (ccTLD) for Saint Helena.

It is an island of volcanic origin and one of the most isolated islands in the world, in the South Atlantic ocean. It is also a British overseas territory. It consists of both the island of Saint Helena, and also the dependencies of Ascension Island and Tristan de Cunha. It is Britain's second oldest remaining colony, and for several centuries it was used by the British as a place for exile, most notably for people such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo and over 5,000 Boer prisoners.

The top-level domain name .sh was introduced in 1997. It is operated by NIC.SH (which is run by the Internet Computer Bureau ICB), and sponsored by the Government of Saint Helena. The .sh domain name registry is an active member of the Council of European National Top-Level Domain Registries which discusses matters affecting country code top-level domain registries; it acts as a channel of communication to Internet governing bodies and entities involved in the Internet. The .sh domain name is registered by a few sites on Saint Helena, but mostly elsewhere. The ICB headquarters can be located in Christchurch England.

Registrations for a .sh domain names can be taken directly at a second level. However, second-level registrants must have a professional or academic qualification (though, apparently, this rule is not enforced). Registrations for a .sh domain name may also be taken at a third-level under various second-level labels. The second-level labels are as follows:

  • co.sh -- for commercial entities
  • com.sh -- for commercial entities
  • org.sh -- for non-profit organizations
  • gov.sh -- for government departments and agencies
  • edu.sh -- for educational institutions
  • net.sh -- for Network Service Providers
  • nom.sh -- for non-island internet sites

When registering for a third-level domain name under a second-level label, the applicant must be a resident of Saint Helena. There are also other governed rules: two character names within third-level domain name are allowed (i.e. 3x.com.sh); all second level names used by NIC.SH are banned as being used as third-level names (e.g. com.com.sh); all top-level domains are banned from being used as third-level domains (e.g. org.com.sh); all one letter domains (i.e. [a-z].xxx.sh) are restricted for applicants registering for a .sh domain name, for they are reserved for possible future sub-domain usage.

When registering directly at a second-level domain name, other than needing a professional or academic qualification, single or two letter/number domain names are restricted. Two letter ISO 3166 country codes and Country names are reserved.

The top-level .sh domain name for Saint Helena has name servers in Amsterdam (Netherlands), London (UK), Melbourne (Australia), New York (East USA), San Francisco (West USA) and Tokyo (Japan).
