The ccTLD of Ecuador is ".ec" and domains can be registered under the second! level .ec domain name by anyone, anywhere, there is no need for a local presence in Ecuador in order to register under .ec.

In addition to the second level .ec domain registration, there are several sub-domains under .ec but some of these are restricted to Ecuadorian residents only, whilst other sub-domains are available to anyone, anywhere without a local presence.

Domain names can be registered under the extension below by anyone, anywhere without the need of a local presence in Ecuador:

  • .info.ec - information
  • .net.ec - Internet Service Providers

There are other sub-domains under .ec which are only available to legal entities registered in Ecuador who have a local presence there:

  • .edu.ec - Educational organisations like Universities, Schools, Collegses registered in Ecuador
  • .gov.ec - Only for use of the Government of the Republic of Ecuador and its governmental institutions

Domain names registered under .ec must be between 3 and 65 characters long, although the registry suggest a limit of 25 characters for practical purposes.

Domain names which "makes reference to aspects or official subjects of the country without having the due authorization for it" are also forbidden, as defined by the Ecuador registry.

Domain names which are offensive, contrary to the laws of Ecuador, or "affect the moral or alter public order" are also restricted and unavailable for registration.

Domains registered under .ec are initially registered for a minimum of two years, and can then be renewed annually or for 2,3,5 or 10 year periods.

The registry also detail very specific warnings about registrations which come under the following catagories:

  • registering personal names where the registrant has no link to the name
  • a domain name has been registered or is being used in bad faith
  • a domain name is registered where the registrant has no right over or legitimate interests in the name
  • registering a domain name with the intention of selling it on to the rightful owner of a trademark, trade name, social name or corporation name
  • the domain name was registered primarily for the purpose of disrupting the business of a competitor
  • the domain name was intentionally used to attract, for commercial gain, Internet users to the licensee's web site or other on-line location, by creating a likelihood of confusion with a trademark, trade name, social name or corporation name's owner
